Starting university and moving away from home can be one of the best experiences of your adult life. Yes, it can also be a bit overwhelming but if you dive in head first, get involved and take advantage of everything that comes your way, we guarantee that you’ll have a ball.
First year, Olly from The Ascent, tells us about how he nailed his first week at university and IconInc.
Well, rise and shine was a little too early at 8am but my first day of uni started at 9am sharp. I got dressed and headed down for Grab & Go breakfast, it’s so handy if you’re running late or fancy a croissant and coffee for the road. A short walk later, I found myself at the university and ready to get my teeth into the induction week.
I think I’m going to like this whole university experience, day two brought a free day out to Ghetto Golf (a themed mini golf course), to help everyone on the course to get to know each other. There’s also talk of taking us out for lunch tomorrow at a mystery location. Oh yeah! After a busy day, it felt right to kick back in the IconInc cinema room, with a bag of pick and mix, and put a film on.
After heading along to the Wellness Wednesday morning yoga session in the gym, I found out yesterday’s rumors were true. The university took us for a Nandos, which I definitely can’t complain about! Followed by a subject themed pub quiz, it was great working in teams with my new course mates. Sadly we didn’t win, but only missed out by one point - we’ll get them next time.
The university gave us the rest of the week off, obviously to get ready for the big day on Monday when everything properly starts but after all it is freshers’ week… so I decided to head to Concert Square, a two minute walk, into the heart of the nightlife. Frankly it would have been rude not to.
There are so many places to choose from, fitting everyone’s tastes in music from local bands and musicians, to well-known DJs and performers. I went to Level, they have three floors and play different genres of music on each one. There’s house on floor one, R&B/hiphop on floor two and pop/club classics on floor three. I like it because you can wander between the levels and listen to whatever you fancy.
Well, the end of the week has arrived and it’s absolutely flown by. I started the day with a workout downstairs in the gym and headed along to a freshers’ event just a short walk down the road. It was great but exhausting… there is only so much free stuff you can take - even with the promise of free pizza! Time to top off a great week with a game of darts (or two) upstairs in the sports lounge, wish me luck! After the Seedlip cocktail masterclass, that is. Cheers!
Everyone likes tacos, right? Because the Tropical Fiesta Party had plenty to go around! Not only did we enjoy a mixture of exotic food, a chocolate fountain and some live music… but it was a great way to get to know some of the other residents living here at IconInc. This worked a trick as I’ve now made loads of friends who are always up for a game of pool.
After a quick visit home, there was only one more thing to do and that was to head back down to the cinema room for the most iconic event of the week… the showing of The Greatest Showman feat. some freshly popped popcorn. I’d best grab a good night’s sleep, tomorrow is the big day!
