    There is no doubt that Leeds has a lot to offer, and when it comes to cultural experiences, there is plenty to keep people busy.  Leeds has a host of museums, art galleries, theatres and stately homes all brimming with sites and pieces that will bring the history of Leeds to life for you and give you an all-round experience of the cultural side of the city.

    Leeds also puts on a whole range of events throughout the year, which makes it a cultural hotspot.  From events like ‘Opera in the park’ and ‘Classical Fantasia’ to theatre productions in the West Yorkshire Playhouse. With so much to do, it’s easy to see why Leeds is becoming more and more popular to visit.

    Museums


    When it comes to museums, Leeds has many to choose from.  Some of the most popular include the Leeds City Museum, the Royal Armouries Museum and the Thackray Medical Museum. The Leeds City Museum was developed in 2005 when it was converted into a museum from the Leeds old Civic Theatre into a new state of the art museum with interactive and informative displays. People of all ages to get into the spirit of the history of Leeds.

    The Royal Armouries Museum will really help you delve into the past; with its national collection of arms and armour you can transport yourself back to the time of Henry VIII and imagine what it was like to get yourself ready for a jousting tournament. The Thackray Medical Museum was voted the "UK Museum of the Year" and "England's Visitor Attraction of the Year" for its wealth of medicinal history.

    Art Galleries


    Leeds also supports a wide range of art galleries.  With many famous local artists past and present there is plenty of artwork to satisfy the tastes of most art lovers. The Leeds City Art Gallery was founded in 1888 and includes work from artists such and Damien Hirst and David Hockney.

    The Henry Moore Institute is an award winning modernistic gallery designed to encourage appreciation of the visual arts. Leeds University has its own galley known as the Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery has ever changing exhibits to keep people coming back over and over again.

    Theatres & Music Halls


    If you are looking for a theatrical experience Leeds certainly has plenty to choose from. The City Varieties Music Hall, the Carriageworks Theatre and the Northern Ballet Theatre produce live entertainment that will sweep you up into one big cultural ball.

    As the longest running music hall the City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds is a small music hall in a historic building. It first opened in 1865 as Thornton's New Music Hall and Fashionable Lounge and now caters for all with top comedy, cabaret and musical acts.

    In contrast, the Carriageworks Theatre is a new modern theatre that exhibits plays, musicals, dance and film and is the home for the Leeds Civic Arts Guild. It is most famous for the Leeds International Film Festival.

    The Northern Ballet Theatre displays contemporary ballet from around the world. Whether you are an avid ballet fan or keen to try it out the NBT will let you embrace the beauty and emotion that comes with watching these beautiful dancers perform.
