Your first few weeks of university are a rollercoaster ride. You have left the safety of your home, and ventured to an unknown place to begin the next phase of your life. You have to make new friends, get used to living in a new town or city and digest a lot of information about your course.

The first few weeks which involve ‘Fresher’s Week’ are pretty intense. There are some common things that happen to almost all new university students. It’s all part of settling in and getting used to your new way of life. Here are nine things that happen to every student in their first few weeks of University.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Get lost on campus

It takes time to get to know your campus, and figure out where all your lectures are. The chances are, in your first few weeks of uni, you will get lost at least once and have to ask for directions. Some University campuses can be surprisingly large and not that simple to navigate.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Sleep in and miss a lecture

Most students end up missing a lecture or two during their first few weeks. There’s a lot going on and it seems impossible to attend all your lectures with everything else you are involved in. A lot of students tend to sleep in at University, and you will probably sleep through your alarm once or twice at the start of (and some people throughout) University.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Fall asleep during a lecture

All the late nights and constant socialising will eventually leave you feeling exhausted. After a particularly late night, you might find it extremely difficult not to drift off during your lectures, especially if they are a little dull.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Drink a little too much

It’s inevitable that most students will end up drinking far too much in their first few weeks of uni and having a few drunken incidents. If you aren’t a big drinker then you will get to avoid this one, and the storming hangover.

[wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Have a moment where you feel homesick

No one will admit to it, but a lot of students feel a little bit homesick when they first start University. You are often so busy during fresher’s week that it takes your mind off being away from home, but when things calm down you might start to miss home.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Catch fresher’s flu

Fresher’s flu is very difficult to avoid, and it’s something all students are familiar with. The partying eventually takes its toll and a lot of students end up getting a horrible cold at the start of uni. It’s usually due to being run down, or you could catch an illness from another student. To avoid fresher’s flu don’t over do it, eat properly and get plenty of sleep.

[wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Eating ridiculous amounts of takeaway food

It’s the first time you truly have to fend for yourself, and this involves attempting to cook meals. Quite a few students end up being lazy in their first few weeks of uni and surviving on takeaways and microwave meals.

    [wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Spending too much money

It’s not a good idea to blow your student loan budget in the first few weeks of uni, but sadly some students do. Fresher’s week can be very expensive, so try and watch what you are spending if you want to avoid quickly running out of cash.

[wp-svg-icons icon="star-3" wrap="i"] Dressing up in outrageous fancy dress

All University clubs host nights out during the first few weeks of uni that involve dressing up in all sorts of crazy fancy dress. Make sure you bring a few fancy dress outfits with you to uni as you will definitely need them.
