The first few weeks of University can be very exciting, but heading off to University can also be a bit overwhelming

    An overwhelming experience

You are leaving the security of your parents’ home, and heading off to an unknown place. The prospect of meeting new people and making friends can seem a little daunting. However, it’s surprising how easy it is to make friends when you are doing all sorts of activities together. Fresher’s week is usually full of socialising, so it gives you a chance to meet lots of people.

You might feel a little bit homesick at the beginning of University. This is completely normal, and although many of your fellow students won’t admit it, they are probably feeling homesick too. Try and keep yourself busy and throw yourself into University life, and you will soon forget about being homesick. You will be so busy signing up for your course, finding your way around, going on big nights out and attending all your lectures that you will hardly have time to think.

    Keep calm and settle in

You will probably get quite tired during your first few weeks of uni, because there is so much to take in. Moving and settling into a new place alone is tiring. When you go to University you have a lot more to contend with. The first two weeks will be packed with big nights out, University events and you will also have to get stuck into your course.

Getting used to living in a new place will seem odd at first. As soon as you start to make friends you will begin to feel more settled. Make sure you bring everything you need to help you feel at home such as furniture and accessories. Put your own stamp on your new University room by adding personal touches.

    University unions and societies

You will also need to sign up to Universities clubs and societies during the first few weeks. Usually there is a day where you can go and meet members from different clubs and find out information about when they train or meet up and what’s involved with being a member. Try and join a club or two if you can, as it’s a great way to meet new people and feel part of something. You may as well take the opportunity to try something fun whilst at University, or continue with a sport you are passionate about.

Students also get to meet some of their lecturers and are usually assigned a course tutor or mentor at the start of university. Your mentor will most likely be a source of support for you throughout university. You will probably have an initial meeting with them where you can ask any burning questions about your course.

    Get lost on campus

The first few weeks at University give you the opportunity to find your bearings. You will most likely get lost on campus at some point, and struggle to find your way to some of your lectures. Don’t get too stressed, everyone is in exactly the same boat.

Your first few weeks may seem a little scary, but you will soon get into the swing of things. Most people say that University was the best time of their life. Make the most of your time as a student and work hard towards obtaining your degree and you will have no regrets.
