Get Out Of The City: The Best Day Trips In Yorkshire

Emma Hart

Leeds is a great city and it's surrounded by great places. In a short drive, train journey, or bus ride, you can be somewhere completely new. All the following places are great day trips from Leeds so get your jacket on and check them out...

Get out into the fresh air and take a walk through Ilkley. The town itself is very pretty but it’s the Cow and Calf rocks on the moors which provide stunning views over the valley. Take a walk in the hills along with a picnic and spend a good day in the countryside of Ilkley.

York is a wonderful city. It’s full of history, cobbled streets, and there’s the gorgeous York Minster in the city centre. Take the train from Leeds, which only takes around 30 minutes, and visit The Shambles, walk along the River Ouse, step back in time down Stonegate, or step onto York Walls to do a circular route around the city.

If you want to feel the sea breeze, go to Whitby. The delightful coastal town has a long beach which stretches for miles. There are cute little beach huts, you can go surfing, or you can just eat fish and chips by the harbour. If the beach isn’t your thing, Whitby is still worth a visit for the pretty streets and Whitby Abbey at the top of the hill. This place is said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula!

Brimham Rocks

Brimham Rocks is a place for those with a sense of adventure. Drive out of Leeds for a day at this National Trust site and clamber over the cool rock formations. Not only will it get your adrenaline pumping but you’ll get some incredible views over the hills of Yorkshire.

We know you live in Leeds, and yes it’s a cool city. And we know Manchester isn't in Yorkshire. But trust us, Manchester is cool and well worth the out-of-county journey. Hop on the train across The Pennines and spend a day exploring Manchester’s Northern Quarter where you’ll find independent coffee shops and great street art. Then there’s John Rylands Library which is a real-life Hogwarts. There are also some amazing rooftop bars in Manchester – check out 20 Stories for 360 panoramic views of the city.

Harrogate is a quaint town where you’ll find Betty’s, a quintessential British tea room where you’ll be able to devour the most delectable cakes and food. After all that delicious food, why not relax in Harrogate’s Turkish Baths. Spend a couple of hours pampering yourself in the steam rooms before enjoying a massage to end the day.
