Can Two People Live in a Student Studio? A Guide to Dual Occupancy Student Accommodation

Can two people live together in student accommodation?

If you're heading to university with a partner – or you're both students looking for a more affordable way to live together – it's a question worth asking.

The answer is yes, in some student accommodation two people can share the same studio through what's known as dual occupancy.

At Iconinc, selected apartments are available for dual occupancy at no additional accommodation cost, which means two eligible residents can share one apartment and split the cost between them.

But there's one particularly important thing to understand:

Dual occupancy means sharing one studio apartment and one bed. It does not mean getting two separate bedrooms.

If you're happy sharing your space, however, it could completely change the cost of your student accommodation.

What is dual occupancy student accommodation?

Dual occupancy means two people are permitted to live in one student studio rather than each person booking their own separate apartment.

A studio typically combines your sleeping, living and kitchen space within one private apartment, alongside your own ensuite bathroom.

With dual occupancy, both residents live within that same space.

It can be a great option for couples or two people who are completely comfortable sharing a bedroom and bed.

Can two students share a studio apartment?

Yes, providing the accommodation provider allows dual occupancy and the particular apartment is suitable for two residents.

You should never assume that because an apartment has a double or king-size bed, two people are automatically allowed to live there.

Occupancy is governed by the accommodation agreement, so both residents need to be included correctly within the booking.

If you're considering sharing an Iconinc apartment, speak to our team about which apartments are currently available for dual occupancy and whether you meet the relevant booking requirements.

Does dual occupancy mean you get two beds?

    No.

    This is an important distinction.

Dual occupancy at Iconinc is two people sharing one apartment and one bed.

You aren't booking a twin room, two-bedroom apartment or two separate sleeping areas.

That's why dual occupancy is particularly suited to couples who already intend to live and sleep together.

If you each want your own bedroom or bed, dual occupancy studio accommodation isn't the right option for you.

Could dual occupancy make student accommodation cheaper?

    Potentially, significantly.

If an eligible Iconinc apartment is available for dual occupancy at no additional accommodation cost, two people can share the cost of one apartment rather than paying for two individual studios.

For example, if you split the accommodation cost equally, each person's share would effectively be half of the apartment price.

That can make a higher-spec private student apartment much more accessible when you're living as a couple.

You'll get somewhere to live together while still enjoying the facilities and student lifestyle available within the wider Iconinc building.

Is dual occupancy good for couples at university?

    It can be.

For couples already comfortable living together, sharing a studio can offer a balance between student life and having your own private home.

Instead of sharing kitchens and living rooms with a large group of housemates, you have your own space together.

At Iconinc, that means your own kitchen and ensuite bathroom within your studio.

Depending on the apartment you choose, you can also gain additional living and storage space.

Our Elegance apartments, for example, include a king-size bed and a relaxed living area with a two-seater sofa, while our larger Grande apartments provide separate living and sleeping zones, a bigger kitchen, dining space and a study area.

If two people are sharing, that extra space can make a big difference.

What should you consider before choosing dual occupancy?

Sharing your home with somebody can be brilliant – but sharing a studio means exactly that. You're sharing pretty much all of your private living space.

Before booking, have a proper conversation about how you'll use it.

Are you comfortable sharing one bed?

    This is the big one.

Dual occupancy doesn't create an additional sleeping space. You'll both share the same bed, so make sure that's what you both want before you book.

    Do your routines work together?

One of you might have 9am lectures while the other studies late into the night.

Perhaps one person likes total silence while working and the other needs music.

These things aren't necessarily problems, but they're worth discussing when you'll be sharing the same studio.

Is there enough space for both of you?

Look carefully at the apartment type rather than focusing purely on price.

Storage, kitchen space and living areas can become more important when two people are sharing.

A larger studio may be worth considering if you want more room to spread out.

    Where will you study?

Living together doesn't mean you need to spend every minute together.

Access to communal areas can be particularly useful for dual-occupancy residents.

Iconinc offers dedicated study spaces alongside social and wellbeing facilities, giving you plenty of opportunities to step outside your apartment without even leaving the building.

One of you can concentrate in a study space while the other relaxes at home. You can head to the gym, catch up with friends in the lounge or simply find a different spot to work.

Your studio might be shared, but the wider building gives you much more room to live.

What are the benefits of dual occupancy?

For the right people, there are plenty.

The obvious one is value. Splitting the price of one apartment between two can substantially reduce the individual cost of your accommodation.

    But it's not purely financial.

Living together means you have someone you know at home from day one, which can be particularly reassuring if you're both moving to a new city or coming to study in the UK from overseas.

You can cook together, explore your new city together and still become part of the wider Iconinc community.

And because you're living in a self-contained studio rather than a traditional shared student house, you have a private space that's genuinely yours.

Is dual occupancy right for you?

Dual occupancy could be a great choice if:

    • You're a couple who wants to live together while studying.

    • You're happy sharing one bed and one studio.

    • You want to split your accommodation cost.

    • You like the independence of having your own kitchen and bathroom.

    • You still want access to a wider student community and shared facilities.

If you'd prefer separate bedrooms, very different living routines or lots of individual private space, separate apartments may suit you better.

There's no right or wrong answer. It's about finding the setup that works for both of you.

    Share the Iconinc experience

Why pay for two separate apartments if you'd rather live together?

With dual occupancy available at no additional accommodation cost on selected Iconinc apartments, you could share one studio – and split the cost between two.

You'll have your own kitchen and ensuite bathroom, plus access to the wider Iconinc experience, from study and social spaces to gyms, wellbeing facilities, resident events and our supportive team.

Just remember: one apartment, two people, one bed.

If that sounds perfect for you, speak to the Iconinc team about dual-occupancy availability in Leeds, Liverpool, Lincoln or Glasgow and find the apartment that works for both of you.
