If you’re new to England, then you may not be familiar with ‘Bonfire Night’ also known as ‘Guy Fawkes Night’. The history of this commemorative night goes way back to 1605 when a fellow called Guy Fawkes was caught guarding a rather large amount of gunpowder with the intent to blow up the House of Parliament, and the King.

To celebrate that this intended act of treason didn’t succeed, every year we celebrate by having fireworks to represent the gunpowder, along with a bonfire with burning effigies of Guy Fawkes.

So, grab your warmest clothes, be prepared for rain and head out to experience how Leeds likes to mark the traditional celebration.

    Roundhay Park - Free

Situated around beautiful lakes, Roundhay Park is one of England’s biggest city parks. So as you may be able to imagine, they put on a pretty impressive firework show and a huge bonfire which is lit at around 7.30pm. Buses run straight from the city centre to Roundhay, but leave at least an hour and a half to get there as in previous years, the roads have been very busy.

    Hyde Park - Free

Woodhouse Moor in Hyde Park is always very busy with students, mainly because outside of the city centre, Hyde Park and Headingley is widely populated by students. It can get pretty muddy sometimes, so invest in a cheap pair of wellies, or something you don’t mind ruining. Usually there is a traditional English fairground on the field on the adjacent side of the road, so get there before the action at 7.30pm and enjoy some of the rides and games of the fair.

    The Mustard Pot - Free

Be looked after this Bonfire Night with tasty traditional Yorkshire Parkin and quality pub grub at the Mustard Pot pub in Chapel Allerton. Chapel Allerton is not far out of the city centre and has plenty of nice bars, perfect for a chilled night out. The fun will kick off at around 6pm so get there in plenty of time to get a good view of the firework display in their magical outside seating area.

So remember remember the 5th of November and organise a chilly night of fiery fun with your friends.
