Wow - what an exciting adventure awaits you! On the first day of university, it is natural to feel a little nervous, but we bet you are super excited too! Whether you are moving to a new country or moving 50 miles to a new city in the UK, this is an exciting milestone in your life. This article talks you through step by step of what to expect on your first day and the key tasks you need to complete before commencing on the new journey at university! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENROLLED On the first day of university, the first and foremost thing is to ensure you have successfully enrolled on your course. Each university has a different procedure but check your email inbox as you should have received clear instructions on how to go about this. You may need to go to the university campus in person or it may be an online form. Approximately a month prior to your first day at university, you will be emailed with a username, password, and instructions on how to register to your uni’s website. And all of this should be completed before you start. Once you have enrolled, you’re officially a student of your chosen university! Make sure that you print your timetable, after all, you don’t want to be late on your first day! BRING LOTS OF STATIONARY Your first day of uni will feel like a roller coaster of experiences and a ton of information. Fortunately, you’ll be meeting lecturers and your classmates and who knows you might end up making some of your best mates by the end of the week. Brace yourself for lots of information so make sure that you have all the pens and pencils in the world. It’s also best to bring a notepad and a laptop to take notes. Pro tip: we can all be forgetful at times so we recommend you keep a calendar handy to mark your assignment dates or set a reminder on your phone. VISIT THE CAMPUS BEFOREHAND We recommend that you visit your campus ahead of your lectures and seminars starting - get familiar with the campus and your key buildings. That way, on your first day, it’ll be easy to navigate your way to your first lecture. It can be daunting getting to know the new city you move to so be sure to make the most of the Iconinc welcome weeks, where the Iconinc team will help guide you to local amenities, point out directions to local transport and be on hand to help you every step of the way. UPLOAD A PICTURE OF YOUR STUDENT ID Your student ID card is a little yet the most important thing in your student life. Before your first day at uni, you’ll be given a moment to upload a picture of your student card. This will save your time, energy, and will speed up the process. Remember your student ID card is pivotal, not only to show that you attend the uni, but also grab yourself some great discounts in some of the most amazing restaurants, shops and bars in the city. MAKE SURE YOU READ UP ABOUT YOUR UNIVERSITY Usually, universities will send you emails in the weeks before your starting date along with the information regarding any social events as well as registration details for the uni’s intranet. The intranet will allow you easy access to your timetables and course information. But if you want to be at the top of your game, why not start checking out social media handles of your university? Each uni has certain social media groups that you can join, mostly they are fully dedicated to the international students, so you can make some great friends even before you arrive. Don’t forget to follow Iconinc on social media to learn all about the exciting things in store for you when you arrive at your luxury student accommodation. Iconinc also has an app, so be sure to download this prior to arriving - you’ll be able to register for events, speak with the 24/7 concierge team and log any maintenance requests via this app - it’s your one stop shop whilst living at luxury student accommodation, Iconinc. TRY TO STAY CALM Preparing to go to uni can be stressful. It could be that you are worried about having to deal with missing home, making new friends, navigating your way around the city, to name but a few. First and foremost, you are not alone in this. The vast majority of students are feeling exactly the same as you. But let’s just think of it as a new chapter in your life and focus on all the positive, exciting things to come! If you are feeling overwhelmed, make sure you touch base with our dedicated Community and Events Manager or the 24/7 concierge team - all will talk through any concerns you have and help you work out solutions to ensure you’re happy and prepared to take on this new adventure. Sometimes, stress and anxiety might take a toll on you and while it’s absolutely natural, try not to beat yourself up. Try to rationalise everything in your mind, take some time out, give yourself a break, and indulge in self-care practices. At Iconinc, you can relax and unwind in the 24/7 state-of-the-art gym, chill out in the sauna or steam room or make new friends playing games or watching TV in one of the many communal lounges.
